About SWEP

SWEP was formed in 1996 by a small group of local business people keen to influence the future of their local economy.

Since then the partnership has gone from strength to strength as it has evolved, consistently recognising the need and lobbying for change to create a strong and sustainable economy.

SWEP is run by the Board which is made up of business representatives, and private and public sector organisations and has nine principal objectives.

In 2009 as part of local government reorganisation in the county (when Wiltshire Council became the single unitary authority) a commitment was made to allow businesses to set the agenda for economic development in their area.

This has been captured in a new Economic Strategy.

For the first time SWEP now has a full time Partnership Manager and is also responsible for overseeing the work of the Wiltshire Council south Wiltshire economic development team, who will be delivering actions to achieve the strategy.

Before local government reorganisation the focus of SWEP was the south Wiltshire area covered by Salisbury District Council. This has now been extended to include Tidworth, formally part of Kennet.

Salisbury remains the main city in south Wiltshire and Amesbury, Downton, Mere, Tidworth, Tisbury and Wilton the main market towns.
