Salisbury
Salisbury
In the shadow of the old hill fort at Old Sarum, Salisbury or New Sarum as it was originally known is the most densely populated community area in South Wiltshire. Quickly becoming the regions capital, Salisbury has managed to retain much of its historic and cultural elements, with large tourist attractions such as Salisbury Cathedral and many medieval buildings dotted around the city itself.
Suburban expansion has ensured that the villages of Harnham, Fisherton, Bemerton and Old Sarum are within Salisbury city limits. The surrounding countryside offers different attractions, with beautiful landscapes interrupted by meandering rivers and lovely villages and small towns.
Whilst Salisbury has benefitted greatly from the military presence on Salisbury Plain, it has also become well known for its culture, educational centre and shopping. A number of national organizations are also located within its centre, who take advantage of the rail and road links enabling Salisbury to be within London commuting distance.
A small city with a population of only 40,000, its size makes the city easy to get to know as everything is within walking distance- work, the shops and schools.
"There is no doubt in my mind that Salisbury Cathedral is the single most beautiful structure in England and the Close around it the most beautiful space" Bill Bryson, Notes from a Small Island
