At the south-east corner of Wiltshire, the Downton community area is boreder on two of its sides by Hampshire. Stray south and east of Downton and you enter in the woodlands of Redlynch and Nomansland, into the New Forest.
Like the Wilton and Amesbury communities, Downton is a relatively small community in comparison with Salisbury, but was originally started as a small scale town in the 13th Century. Traditionally the Downton area was rich in income and recorded the second highest incidence after Malmesbury of car ownership.
Long distance commuting from Downton is well above average and unemployment remains relatively low.
